Good guide, slow delivery

I ordered the Guide Tao Portugal last month. The guide itself is well-researched and has some unique recommendations for sustainable travel. Shipping took about 10 days to get to my place in California, which felt a bit long. Customer service was responsive when I inquired about the delay, which was a plus. Overall, it's a solid product, but faster shipping would make it even better.

Decent value for digital pack

I bought the 'Packs thématiques' for Southeast Asia, which included the Guide Tao Vietnam and Thailand. It was a good deal for the digital versions, definitely saved a bit compared to buying them separately. I appreciated getting the e-books right away. Worth it for the price I paid.

Consistent quality, returning customer

This was my third purchase from Viatao; I've previously bought guides for Italy and Greece. This time I got the Guide Tao Espagne. The quality and focus on responsible tourism are consistently good. Delivery was similar to my past orders, around a week to the East Coast. Always reliable, which is why I keep coming back for their specific niche.

Solid experience, helpful support

I purchased the Guide Tao Québec and a 'Carnets de notes écologiques' a few weeks ago. The ordering process on the website was straightforward. I received an order confirmation almost instantly. Delivery to my address in Florida took about 8 business days; the items were well-packaged and arrived in perfect condition. The guide itself is quite thorough, focusing on ethical travel, which is exactly what I was looking for. I had a quick question about updating the digital version later, and their support team responded within 24 hours with clear instructions. The notebook is also high quality. My only minor note is that the tracking updates were a little sparse, but the package did arrive within the estimated window.

Anyone know if their e-books are just PDFs or are they like, readable on a Kindle with proper formatting?

A Alex Foster 1 month ago
pretty sure they're just PDFs. you can use them on a kindle but it's not like a native kindle book, if that makes sense.

Yeah, confirmed, they are usually PDF format. I bought the Thailand one and it worked fine on my tablet, just like a regular PDF document.

Are these guides genuinely focused on sustainable travel? Or is it more of a marketing gimmick?

T Troy L. 2 months ago
Nah, it's their whole thing. They really dig into local, ethical spots. Much better than the big commercial guides.

Definitely legit. I've used a few and they really highlight places that respect the environment and local communities. It's a different kind of travel.

I'm trying to use a coupon code I got from their newsletter but it's not taking much off the total. Is there a cap on discounts for physical books?

E Emma Whitfield 1 month ago
Yeah, there's a law in France that limits how much you can discount physical books. So codes usually take off like 5% max on those.

For sure. The bigger discounts tend to be on the digital guides or if you get a bundle.

Thinking of grabbing a couple of guides, maybe one for France and one for Italy. Do they ever have sales where you can get a discount for buying multiple guides?

R Renee Marsh 1 month ago
They definitely have 'pack' deals sometimes, especially for digital versions. Keep an eye out.

I got a bundle discount for a few French region guides last summer. It's not a huge percentage off, but every little bit helps with those book prices.

How are these compared to Lonely Planet or Rough Guides? More in-depth or different vibe?

A Alex E. 2 months ago
Way different vibe. Lonely Planet is good for general info but Tao guides are much more about slow travel, local experiences, and being eco-conscious.

I'd say they're less about 'tourist hotspots' and more about finding hidden gems and supporting local businesses responsibly. LP is more mass market.

Hey, I'm looking at getting the Tao Guide for Portugal. Any idea how long shipping usually takes to NYC?

T Troy K. 1 month ago
Mine took about 2 weeks to California, so probably similar for NYC. They ship from France.

Yeah, I ordered a few for a trip last year, seemed like standard international shipping. Maybe 10-14 days?

What payment methods do they accept? Just cards or can I use PayPal too?

J Jared Lindqvist 2 months ago
Pretty sure they take all major credit cards. I paid with Visa last time.

I think I used PayPal for my order a while back, but don't quote me on it. They definitely do cards though.
